Our free summer programs are in full swing! We’re one week into our Camp for middle schoolers, and our Institute for ages 14–19 launches today.
Here’s a look at what our participants have been up to, and a sneak peek at what the summer still has in store!
At Camp, we’re exploring the power of names and ancestry. Together, we’re reading and analyzing Anzu and the Realm of Darkness by Mai K. Nguyen, a graphic novel based in Japanese folklore. Thank you to Viking Books for Young Readers for providing copies for all of our students!
We’re also making our summer brighter—literally! Last week, our participants became engineers by building battery-powered circuits to turn on lights and illuminate their artwork. This week, they’ll visit the Newtown Creek Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility, where they’ll learn about hydrology and the management of water in NYC.
And today we’re welcoming 25 new and returning participants to our high school Institute! Over the next month, these students will practice new STEM and arts-based skills and gain insight into potential career paths from experts in publishing, urban planning and architecture, and more. They’ll also take field trips to the Pratt Dye Garden and to Weeksville, one of the United States’ first free Black communities, right here in Brooklyn.
